Grace Place: A History of United Way Support
In June of 2001 a group of concerned individuals from nonprofit agencies and the community met for the first time to discuss the issue of homelessness in St. Croix County. We conducted surveys and studied different models for temporary housing. We became convinced that just providing a bed for the night was not the answer. A longer stay, staff and volunteer support and a variety of services were needed in order to prevent a reoccurrence of the homelessness.
Our group identified the former convent at St. Anne Catholic Community in Somerset as a potential site for a transitional housing shelter. Students at the school had a contest to select a name for the home--Grace Place. However, much work was needed to renovate the convent into a shelter. United Way St. Croix Valley agreed to lead the fundraising effort and members of the St. Croix Valley Builder’s Association donated much of the labor and materials. Grace Place opened in October 2002 with United Way as the leaseholder and The Salvation Army providing staff. It has operated at capacity since opening and has helped thousands.
The demand has continued to grow and more space is needed. The Salvation Army acquired the former Maple Manor building in New Richmond as a new home for Grace Place.
United Way St. Croix Valley and our donors have contributed nearly a half million dollars over the past 11 years for the renovation and operation of Grace Place. I look at the opening of Grace Place as one of the signature achievements of my time with United Way. Ending hunger and homelessness will remain a priority for our United Way. We will continue to work with The Salvation Army and our other agency partners to improve the quality of life for those in need.
