MLK, Jr. Day of Service Food Packing Event

On Jan. 18, 2010, United Way St. Croix Valley held its first Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service volunteer project at the Food Resource Center in Hudson. Approximately 40 volunteers worked to package 7,000 pounds of food for distribution to local food pantries and shelters. United Way partner Emergency Foodshelf Network delivered the food and hygiene items to be packaged.

United Way St. Croix Valley would like to thank everyone who volunteered and helped make this event a success. Special thanks go to Emergency Foodshelf Network, Hudson County Market, Hudson Bagel & Coffee Co., Hudson Star-Observer and The Purple Tree.

Day of Caring volunteers from St. Croix Electric Cooperative

Second Annual Day of Caring

On Sept. 18, 2009, organizations and individuals from all around the St. Croix Valley participated in our second annual Day of Caring event. Senior citizens and local nonprofit organizations benefited from the volunteers' help, which included landscaping, painting, home repairs and cleaning.

This year, approximately 40 project requests were fulfilled by more than 100 volunteers. United Way thanks everyone who participated for their hard work and dedication to making the St. Croix Valley a better place to live. For more information on the 2009 Day of Caring, view the press release.

Family Fresh Market & Community Volunteers

Following the news that Family Fresh Market would be donating 300 Easter meals for four to United Way St. Croix Valley's Food Resource Center, volunteers from the Hudson Family Fresh location as well as local residents stepped in to unload the delivery truck, pack the food into bags and distribute the bags to needy families.

Community members from Hudson, New Richmond, Baldwin and even Minnesota came to the Food Resource Center to pick up a meal in early April. Without the time and effort of the volunteers, United Way could not have distributed the food to so many so quickly and so easily.

Cardinal Health

Cardinal Health has made helping United Way St. Croix Valley and its initiatives a priority for several years, and the company’s contributions of employee time and resources have made a significant difference in the lives of those in the communities the United Way serves. From volunteering at United Way’s Food Resource Center to donating during the annual campaign, Cardinal Health has shown its strong support for the United Way time and time again.

Cardinal employees have dedicated many volunteer hours to the Food Resource Center, and that dedication has been instrumental in getting the center up and running.

Brooke Brokaw & Hats from the Heart

John,

I just wanted to personally thank you for letting us have some foods, etc. from the food distribution yesterday. The clients today have been so excited and grateful to have some bread and produce and already this morning I have heard the comment several times, “this will help so much and save on my budget!” The kids are excited to get a small carton of chocolate milk and a little bag of chocolate cookies as a “Christmas present” from WIC. It may seem like a small thing but the smiles and thank you's from the recipients are heartwarming!

The hats are wonderful too! They are pinned to a bulletin board with a sign stating that Brooke and friends have made the hats this past year and to help themselves if they need a hat. Do you have an address for Brooke so I can send her a thank you note?

Thanks again for the food supplies—greatly appreciated!
